Wait, you went to the UK to look at black opals? Isn't that like a Saudi Arabian going to the UK for the sand?

Beautiful!
Now I want to go back!

Oooopaaaallllssss! Ahhhhh....

Why is it that I adore precious stones and yet I've never wanted to be a geologist or jeweler?

Those are stunningly beautiful. Any idea what the mineral is in the cross section pic at the start of the mineral section?

That is malachite, a copper hydrate.

Ah malachite, I've heard of it (shamefully I have to admit it was via World of Warcraft 9_9). When cut thinly enough is it translucent?

Yes! The lighter the vein, the more light it lets through. In Vctorian times they would cover lamp shades with a very thin veneer to let light through, but more often they used it as the lamp stand.

Ah! Bit of a surprise to know that the items in World of Warcraft are therefore not so fictional as I thought. One of the items for junior engineers was a pair of malachite goggles. I tried to find them just now on the Warcraft wiki but sadly they appear to be one of numerous items removed in the great purging of the game to simplify it down to child level. :(
