A wander around London. First stop, the London Eye.

The day started out cool and cloudy, and grew to windy and wet.

After buying tickets we were forced to endure a 10 minute advertisement on how Good the London Eye is, which was filmed in really poorly done 3D. I had to wear the 3D glasses over my glasses. I did not enjoy it as much as I would enjoy, say, 10 minutes on the engineering of the thing.

While enduring that, the weather turned really crappy and we queued in the wet and wind.

And so finally we were in a Gondola and going around. The views of London are rather good, even through rain-speckled acrylic.

Huh. I was dimly aware of a ferris wheel in iconic pictures of London, but somehow it never occurred to me that it would be so significant that I should know its name... and it may have given me a misconception of what Piccadilly Circus was.

Piccadilly Circus is merely a large intersection with lots of neon. The Eye is another beast altogether.

Ah, I know that design, they just Supersized a standard modern Ferris Wheel design - the only difference being the wire rope cable spokes rather than solid.

The whole thing is driven from 4 huge gearmotors near the bottom with truck tires on the Grit Paint traction rings, right?

Those wire ropes are a good 3" diametre, or more.

It is driven as you say. The hub is just a very large bearing.
