UK Trip Day 5

Today's Travels. in purple.

Left Offord early and headed South to Hatfield House, a spectacular Elizabethan palace. We spent a couple of hours wandering around the interior of the house, and could have spent many more in the gardens but time was pressing.

We headed for Beaconsfield via Hemel Hampstead, which went well until we reached The Magic Roundabout. This roundabout has six roads entering it. Where each road meets the roundabout, there is a mini-roundabout. And the main roundabout is bi-directional. I got lost on the roundabout. Three times. (From Wikipedia)

Eventually we reached Beaconsfield and our target: Bekonscot Model Village. This is a rather well done model of an English village set in the 1930s, that people can wander around like a mob of Godzillas (without the screaming and flaming and breaking)

Ad so we headed home at 5pm, traveling via the M25 (argh) and the A1(M) (gah). The traffic was horrible and crawling. Made it back to Offord for pizza at 7pm.

Tomorrow is a Wedding Day, so not much touring will be done, if any.

Where's the "I survived the magic roundabout and all I got was this lousy T-shirt" T-shirt? ;-)

Whenever I see mention of the magic roundabout, I always wonder if they built it like that because it was the most efficient way to manage traffic or BECAUSE THEY COULD. In my head, the latter option always seems to come out ahead. :)

I think it's a bit of both.

It is, surprisingly, the most efficient way of managing traffic. The Police blocked off all traffic not long after it opened, and let the traffic build for 15 minutes during Peak Hour. Then they opened all roads at once.

The traffic cleared in 10 minutes.

"And the main roundabout is bi-directional."

I... but... WHY?!

My mind boggles on the ligistics of even trying to get on the thing.

Hope the wedding goes well. Tell Sheena that I am thinking of you all and too make sure nothing she (or you) eats is at all furry!
